Soft pastel makeup palettes, floral scents and rejuvenating facial masks to renew skin are all fabulous spring beauty staples. But in addition to those beauty standbys, 2020 has a few surprises, too. We’re talking bolder jewel tones around your lids that make your eye color pop and a hyper-focus on self-care routines and at-home DIY beauty as we shelter in place amid the coronavirus pandemic. Plus, now’s a good time to invest in a hydrating oil that will help brighten your skin for those upcoming Zoom conference calls (and happy hours). Here, eight spring beauty must-haves, including a garden-inspired perfume to a self-tanner straight from the Mediterranean.
Bold blue eye makeup
Think only runway models can pull off an azure blue eyeshadow or turquoise eyeliner? Think again! To tiptoe into this trend, try swapping out your black or brown liner for a bold blue like Glossier’s highly pigmented gel liner in “Adult Swim,” which is striking indigo (Glossier, $15). The trick here is just using the eyeliner on either your top or bottom lid. To really make your eye color pop, try it on your waterline. If you’re up for a bolder beauty dare, though, experiment with an eyeshadow palette like this Afflano Pro Matte blue palette (Amazon, $9.99) that looks as though it was inspired by the Caribbean and has a mix of easy-to-blend shades of blue.
A fresh spring scent
Just in time for warmer temps, Gucci released a limited-edition seasonal scent: Flora Emerald Gardenia Eau de Toilette (starting at $80 for 1.7 oz, Sephora) to carry you through spring and into early summer. The perfume—which comes in a green bottle to symbolize spring—is a fruit-and-floral blend with a woodsy backbone. You’ll pick up notes of sandalwood and cedarwood expertly swirled with pear and gardenia.
A hydrating mask
Spring skin is notably hydrated and dewy. To help brighten up your complexion, indulge in at-home spa day and treat yourself to a hydrating mask like this Luminous Dewy Skin Mask from Tatcha ($12 for one; $45 for four, Tatcha). The mask is designed to drench your skin in Japanese anti-aging superfoods, like fermented green tea, rice and algae. It’s packed with good-for-your skin Vitamin E, plus botanical oils, too. The thin sheet helps impart the hydrating serum deep into your skin.
A satin pink lipstick
Since 1994, the sales of MAC’s Viva Glam lipstick shades have raised money for organizations helping people affected by HIV/AIDS. Now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, MAC is donating $10 million to local organizations that are serving vulnerable populations. MAC’s promise? With the purchase of each Viva Glam lipstick, 100% of the selling price will go to support those who are at high risk during this health crisis. The iconic lipsticks come in three shades, but the Viva Glam II (Mac, $19) is a subdued satin pinkish-beige shade that’s perfect for spring.
A cordless curling wand
If you’re tired of untangling things (your hair, your hair tools’ cords, etc), this cordless curling wand is made for you. The Lunata Cordless Convertible Curling Iron/Wand (Lunata, $250) made its debut this spring. It charges in a couple of hours, is easy to store or pack, and you can slide a clip on if you prefer a curling iron over a wand to achieve your beachy waves. The curling wand reaches 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Lunata also makes a cordless flat iron.
If you’ve been quarantining and haven’t spent much time outside (or the sun hasn’t been out much!), you can prep your skin for summer with streak-free self-tanner. Korres’ new tanning serum (HSN, $29.50) will give you a natural looking tan and it’s especially easy to blend. This made-in-Greece self-tanner comes with a mitt.
Rather than one shade of lipstick dominating the 2020 spring runways, models were sporting super glossy lips. Borrow the look for yourself with this Jewel Pop Glass Glow Mini Lip Collection ($25, Kevyn Aucoin). The shimmery sampler comes with four glosses, like a gold-tinted one and a soft rose pink. Swipe it over bare lips or give your lipstick a little shine. Your lips will appreciate the moisturizing Vitamin E in the lipgloss.
Before you head to bed or right before you apply makeup, apply two to three drops of Boscia’s Tsubaki Beauty Oil (Nordstrom, $46) for supple skin. When you blend it with your moisturizer or foundation, it will give you instant radiance. The botanical blend of cold-pressed tsubaki in this oil is designed to hydrate your skin, but you can also use it on your nails or hair for extra shine. It works well for all skin types.
