Dr. Heather Richardson Talks Breast Cancer Awareness

By: National Lifestyle Content Desk

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of the disease. To help learn more, this week’s Q&A is with Dr. Heather Richardson from Bedford Breast Center in Beverly Hills, California.

Q: What do you want to tell women about the importance of mammograms?

Dr. Richardson: Mammograms save lives! Early detection is the key to cure and mammograms are the number one way curable breast cancers are caught!

Q: Tell us more about free mammogram day at Bedford Breast Center?

Dr. Richardson: We (Bedford Breast Center) are passionate about delivering great care and feel that financial constraints shouldn’t keep women from experiencing a thorough, compassionate, and gentle breast health evaluation. We are donating services to women who don’t have access to screening, who may be worried about feeling a new breast lump, or perhaps are long overdue to have their breast health addressed. Patients with increased risk for cancer because of family history of breast or ovarian cancer are welcome to discuss Myriad MyRisk genetic testing, which we will be offering as well.

Q: You recently teamed up with Kyle Richards for the free mammogram day event, how does a celebrity voice help when it comes to amplifying the cause?

Dr. Richardson: When you have someone like Kyle who has four daughters and who has lost her own mother to breast cancer, you have a person in the spotlight that generously shares her experiences and shows women that they are not alone in their concern for themselves and their loved ones. She has been brave in sharing her vulnerability and that helps women overcome their own fears. The experiences she has shared from her public platform have already prompted women to get their breasts checked out, which has led to cancer detection and has saved lives. We appreciate her shining more light on the subject to urge more women to take care of themselves!

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

Dr. Richardson: Despite these trying times, we have had an outpouring of support for this event. Everyone in the office is excited about giving back to the community, as were our supporters — we had no problems getting volunteers on a day off!
